STEVE MCCURRY
His coverage of the Russia invasion of Afghanistan won the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad, an award dedicated to photographers exhibiting exceptional courage and enterprise. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including Magazine Photographer of the Year, awarded by the National Press Photographers' Association. This was the same year in which he won an unprecedented four first prizes in the World Press Photo Contest. He has won the Olivier Rebbot Memorial Award twice.
Steve McCurry has covered many areas of international and civil conflict, including thirty years of coverage of Afghanistan. He focuses on the human consequences of war, not only showing what war impresses on the landscape, but rather, what it shows on the human face. McCurry is best known for his powerful images of South and Southeast Asia.
McCurry's work has been featured in every major magazine in the world and frequently appears in National Geographic magazine with recent articles on Tibet, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, and the temples of Angkor Wat, Cambodia. McCurry is driven by an innate curiosity and sense of wonder about the world and everyone in it. He has an uncanny ability to cross boundaries of language and culture to capture stories of human experience. "Most of my images are grounded in people. I look for the unguarded moment, the essential soul peeking out, experience etched on a person's face. I try to convey what it is like to be that person, a person caught in a broader landscape, that you could call the human condition."
A high point in his career was the rediscovery of the previously unidentified Afghan refugee girl that many have described as the most recognizable photograph in the world today. When McCurry finally located Sharbat Gula after almost two decades, he said, "Her skin is weathered; there are wrinkles now, but she is a striking as she was all those years ago." McCurry returned from an extended assignment in China on September 10, 2001. His coverage at Ground Zero on September 11 is a testament to the heroism and nobility of the people of New York City. "You felt the horror and immediately, instinctively understood that our lives would never be the same again."
McCurry has published books including The Imperial Way (1985), Monsoon (1988), Portraits (1999), South Southeast (2000), Sanctuary (2002), The Path to Buddha: A Tibetan Pilgrimage (2003), Steve McCurry (2005), Looking East (2006), In the Shadow of Mountains (2007), and his latest book The Unguarded Moment (2009).

THE F/2.8 LENSES
1. Basically there are 2 types of lenses.
1.1 Fixed focal length lenses (35mm, 50mm, 135mm etc).
1.2 Zoom lenses (18-55mm, 35-135mm, 70-200mm etc).
2. All lenses from #1.1 will have a constant maximum aperture
(since the focal length is fixed).
3. Lenses from #1.2 will have 2 sub-categories.
3.1 Having a constant maximum aperture (through out the
entire Zoom range).
3.2 Having a maximum aperture (f/3.5) at the short end of
the zoom range but gradually the maximum aperture becomes "smaller"
(f/5.6) when you shift to the long end of the zoom range.
4. Lenses from #3.1 usually have better optics & perform well in
low light conditions AND are more expensive. High quality & pro lenses
usually fall into this category.
5. Lenses from #3.2 are more main stream (like kit lenses), made
from cheaper materials. Optics can (but not always) match those from
#3.1 but with a trade-off; the max aperture is always "smaller" at the
long end of the zoom range. Lenses like these always perform poorly in
low light conditions AND are so much cheaper.
There are 3 versions of this f/2.8 lens from Tamron.
1. Non-motorized/non-VC (old version).
2. Motorized/non-VC (quoted by Selangor for RM 1,200-00).
3. Motorized/VC (quoted by Selangor for RM 1,580-00).
